When doing readings locally, face to face, I tend to get some pretty strong reactions to the decks I use. “That card looks terrible - is something bad going to happen to me?”

“Um”, I say, “thats the 10 of cups, so unless you think long-term happiness is bad…”

My decks tend toward the surreal, the bizarre, or the just plain kinky, so I thought I’d go on a search for something a little gentler. After perusing a lot of decks, I finally settled on the Fenestra Tarot. I had my doubts about it - I figured all that flowery crap would put me off - but overall the artwork was appealing and I liked the soft muted palette.

When it arrived, the first thing I noticed about it was… erm… the smell. I suppose that’s the laminate, but the odor is faintly reminiscent of some poison berry.

As I flipped through them, I found the illustrations very appealing. The cards follow the symbology of the Rider-Waite deck very closely. I haven’t used a Rider-Waite deck in over 20 years, and handling the cards were kind of like greeting an old friend (albeit one who’s had a face-lift and a tummy-tuck).

The watercolor illustrations are beautifully detailed and very expressive. The cards are large enough to show off the delicate artwork, but flexible enough to make shuffling easy, even for those of us who have freakishly small hands. Considering the high price of the deck, I think the card stock could have been a bit higher quality. The laminate is heavy and slick.

The backs of the cards are illustrated with a gorgeously rendered rose pattern, which would be reversible if US Games hadn’t plunked their copyright into the lower right hand corner, making it possible to tell if the next card will be upright or reversed.

My first reading with the deck was very accurate. I found the cards quite easy to read, and the symbolism to be vivid and evocative. I think this would be a fine deck for beginners as well as seasoned tarot readers. The attractive artwork also makes it a must-have for collectors.
